On Friday, April 19th, the Vermont State Colleges' Administration announced a plan to close at the end of this semester:

    * Northern Vermont University at Lyndon
    * Northern Vermont University at Johnson, and
    * the Randolph campus of Vermont Technical College

This plan is drastic, rushed and devastating to the students, faculty, staff and communities of these colleges. The VSC Board of Trustees plans to take a vote on this plan on Monday 4/20.

Can you BEFORE Monday:

1. Contact the VSC Board of Trustees and ask them to delay this vote.

2. Contact your state legislators and ask them to ask

AFT Vermont nurses and healtcare profesionals at UVM Mecial Center, Porter Medical Center, Brattleboro Medical Center and the Community Health Center of Burlington have asked the Governor to:

·      Expand State funding for the purchase of PPE.

·      Direct all Vermont businesses who have a current supply of PPE, which is not being used by essential workers, to turn over their inventory to the Vermont Emergency Management Office, who will then distribute to our local healthcare facilities in need. For example; business that are closed such as, nail salons, construction and trades, tattoo

I hope you are all staying safe and healthy in this dystopian moment. I have been working with the patient population affected by this pandemic and it has been eye opening how ill- prepared we were as a country to deal with something of this magnitude. We need to continue to push to get front line workers the supplies and equipment they need. We need to make sure our Higher Ed colleagues are not being punished for circumstances beyond their control.

As the Covid-19 crisis is unfolding, AFT Vermont members are organizing and fighting for ourselves, our families, our students and our patients.

Attacks on public education in America by extremists and culture-war peddling politicians have reached new heights (“lows” may be more apt), but they are not new. The difference today is that the attacks are intended not just to undermine public education but to destroy it.
